Maherado Zakynthos: The
village of Maherado is the second largest village of Zakynthos with a
population of about 1,000 inhabitants most of whom are engaged in
agriculture and farming. The beautiful mountainous village is located 10
km south of Zakynthos Town.
Its main attraction is the 14th century Church of Agia Mavra with its
impressive Venetian belfry and collection of fine frescoes and icons.
The church is famous for housing the miraculous icon of Agia Mavra which
is surrounded by various offerings among which is the valuable and
beautiful jewel of Queen Olga. At the centre of the village is the
dominating sight of Agios Nikoloas Church. Nearby is the Monastery of
Yperagathou. |
